Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between scoliosis and back pain by investigating the characteristics and incidence of scoliosis based on university students who are entering into adulthood.
Data were obtained on 188 male and female university students. A scoliometer was used to measure the degree and direction of curves (scoliosisL and both heights of PSIS.
The results are as follows:
1. 56 incidence for curves less than 50;
2. 123 incidence for curves 5~90; and
3. 9 incidence for curves greater than 100
The main site of scoliosis is on lumbar and the directions of curves are significantly more towards the right. PSIS angle (curve) is also more towards the right.
Severity of curves was measured according to presence of back pain. However, no statistical significance was noted.
This study concludes that scoliosis in students are in serious state since there are more than 70% incidence of scoliosis in students with curves more than 50. Further studies should be carried out to enable early diagnosis.
